Maironiemen piru, aikansa julkkis
Lienee lupa hieman piruilla naapurikylästä Maironiemestä. Siellä mellasti piru Laurinmäen talossa tahvanasta seuraavaan pitkäänperjantaihin v. 1888. Tämän ja useiden muiden pirujen tekosista on SKS:n kansanrunousarkistossa muisteluksia, jotka on kerätty etenkin 1930-luvulta alkaen.

Maironiemen pirun ensimmäinen uhri oli Hilma Tiitan kertoman mukaan renki Albin Lötjönen, jota piru heitti tahvanailtana tuvanuunilta piiraspulikalla polveen. Esineitä kuten mittakappa ja pellavavihko lenteli, outoa melua ja naputuksia kuului monena iltana. Erään kerran piru pyssysi pärepuukolla talon Mikko-pojan otsaan. Vaikka puukkoa piiloteltiin ja lopulta se vietiin aittaan raudoitettuun arkkuun, joka lukittiin samoin kuin aitan ovi, puukko ilmestyi pian paikalleen tuvan seinänrakoon. Sattui niinkin, että piru heitti kissan paistiruukkuun, joka oli katettu puokapöytään. Kirassi- eli lamppuöljypullo siirtyi tupaan suljettujen ovien läpi. Kerran piru viskasi tuvan lattialle kolme kiveä, jotka olivat niin painavia, että miehet juuri ja juuri jaksoivat siirtää ne pihalle. Kivet haudattiin noin puolen metrin syvyyteen. Tästä huolimatta samat kivet palautuivat kerta kerran jälkeen takaisin tuvan lattialle. Pirun mellastustusta tultiin katsomaan kauempaakin. Kerran piru nosti tuvan penkin sillä istuvine vieraineen ja heitti sen sivummalle. Pirun mellastus oli niin voimallista, että talon väki joutui muuttamaan tilapäisesti naapureihin. Kun palattiin kotiin, vesisaavi kiehui nurkassa kuin rokkapata.

Maironiemen piru oli siis aikansa julkkis. Hänestä (vai siitä?) kirjoitettiin jopa Viipurin lehdissä ja sepitettiin arkkiveisuja. Parikkalan lisäksi useista lähipitäjistä, jopa Terijoelta, Säämingistä ja Liperistä saakka kerättyjä tietoja tämän pirun tekosista on tallennettu kansanrunousarkistoon. Huomattavan osan näistä tiedoista on koonnut Mikkolanniemellä syntynyt opettaja ja kirjailija Veikko Haakana 1950-luvulla. Ennen kirjailijan uraa hän toimi kansakoulunopettajana esim. Kesusmaalla, muistaakseni lukuvuoden 1947-1948.

Mikä sai räyhähengen mellastamaan Maironiemelle? Useimmilla muistelijoilla on sama selitys: mainitun talon isäntä oli pettänyt markkinoilla hevoskaupoissa ja huijauksen uhri manasi kostoksi pirun kekkaloimaan isännän kartanolla. Pirun räyhääminen loppui, kun isäntä hyvittti kauppa-langolle petoksensa.

Piruista on kirjoitettu suomeksi ainakin kaksi kirjaa: Heikki Tikkala: Olevaisen yöpuoli, Kuopio 1993 ja Pasi Klemettinen: Mellastava piru, SKS Helsinki 1977. Viimemainittu kirja perustuu Joensuun yliopistossa tehtyyn väitöskirjaan. Nämä teokset ovat olleet lähteenäni samoin kuin nuorena kuulemani vanhempien ihmisten tarinat.

Maironiemen pirun kaltaisia räyhähenkiä esiintyi Suomessa lukuisia etenkin maaseudulla 1800-1900 lukujen vaihteen aikoihin. Lieneekö kyseessä ollut aina sama piru? Kansatieteilijät arvostavat Maironiemen pirun mellastajien kahdeksan kuuluisimman ja väkevimmän joukkoon.

Mikä sitten pani tämän henkiolennon mellastamaan ja kiusaamaan ihmispoloja? Uskomustarinoiden tutkijat ovat kirjanneet syiksi räyhäystalon väen seuraavia normirikkomuksia: pyhätyö, jumalanpilkka ja kirkon häpäiseminen, tanssi ja tanssimusiikki, kortinpeluu, juopottelu ja viinankeitto, ylvästely, kiroilu, viheltäminen, riitely, kateus, ahneus, leivän halventaminen, syntyvyyden säännnöstely, siveettömyys, luomakunnan pilkkaaminen ja lakien rikkomukset kuten petokset. Viimemainittu lienee Maironiemen pirun käytöksen syy. Luetteloa katsoessa ihmettelee, ettei joka talossa piru mellastele !

Suuressa maailmassa vanhojen linnojen kummituksia ja erilaisia hirviöitä (Loch Ness!) on hyödynnetty matkailun vetonauloina. Maironiemen pirun maine lienee jo 120 vuodessa himmentynyt siinä määrin, ettei hänen/sen kanssa kannattane enää tehdä sponsorisopimusta esim. paikkakunnan matkailun edistämistarkoituksessa. Sopimuksen laatiminen pirun kanssa saattaisi olla haasteellista. Varoitetaanhan sananlaskussa pirusta: jos pirulle antaa pikkusormen, se vie koko käden!

Sananlaskuihin on tallennettuna välähdyksiä siitä sielunmaisemasta, jossa esivanhempamme elivät. V.1948 ilmestyneessä Suomen kansan sananparsikirjassa on esitetty 8500 sananlaskun näyte 1,5 miljoonaa toisintoa käsittävästä aineistosta. Kirjan sananparsista 80 käsittelee pirua, n. 40 Jumalaa, taivasta ja uskontoa sekä n. 40 syntiä ja helvettiä. Entiset ajat olivat nykyisiä rationaalisia aikoja huomattavasti hengellisempiä ja pirujenkin mellastukselle oli enemmän tilaa. Näissä sananlaskuissa piruista varoiteltiin ja niiden luonnetta ja ulkonäköä moitittiin. Pelättäviin piruihin saatettiin kuitenkin suhtautua jopa ironisesti. Tätä asennnetta kuvaavat esimerkkeinä Laitilasta tallennettu piikittely ”Kyll mnä kärryn tunne, sano piru ko jyrät ajo” ja Kemijärveläinen sutkaus ” Itte kuki kulkee hänen omalla kyytillä, sano piru kun Pyhätunturia perseellään laski”.

Onko näitä mellastavia räyhähenkiä oikeasti olemassa? Voiko niille olla ”luonnontieteellisiä” syitä ja selityksiä? Ne ovat olemassa ainakin niille, jotka niihin uskovat. Mutta se on sitten jo toinen tarina.
